Public House Clay Play with St Austell's Communities
Tom Philipson, Joe Hartley, Abi Holsborough and Zoë Guthrie invite St Austell’s communities to join them for this collaborative design course.
Exploring accessible and experimental making through non-hierarchal design structures, this course is for everyone, whether you regularly work with clay or haven't touched any since you were at school. Through a hands-on virtual tutorial series combining both live and pre-recorded sessions, you’ll learn a series of simple and adaptable pottery techniques that will enable you to make a range of visually stunning pottery products using just a piece of wire and a screw to cut clay.
To get you started ahead of this three-part course, you can watch this intro to the project on Grizedale Arts Youtube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLjMkwj3ypU) which explains the kit you'll get through the post to participate, how to set up your making space at home and a brief introduction to what you'll learn through the course. There are then some further Youtube tutorials available on our channel which you can watch here to help you get to grips with your kit before we start:
- Session 1 An introduction to the course: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8ebHhcn8wg&t=11s
- Session 2 Making Basic Tiles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwtBW4BheiQ
- Session 3 Making Decorations: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lC89b6g4sNc
- Session 4 Making Dishes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GVRV7UeNSQ
Over three 1 hour Zoom-tutorials with Tom and Joe, the course will open up the making process, encouraging dialogue throughout the design development process between designers, artists and communities to produce a new range of useful, collaboratively designed products. Demonstrating that design is enriched when people (of all backgrounds and skills levels) collaborate, the outcome will be a new line of useful products for the people of St Austell which will be sold through an Honest Shop stall at the Whitegold Festival on Saturday 26 June developed by the participants.
Places are limited so advanced booking is essential. We encourage participants to attend all three sessions where possible.
